Serving Up Some Healthy and Sustainable Food
Feb 29
Sustainable food, what is it really about? You may have encountered some restaurants that have sustainable food in their menu or caterers who serve this type of food. You may ask, what’s the deal with sustainable food? A lot of people nowadays are eating healthier and enjoying locally-grown produce. The idea behind sustainable food is that it involves food production methods that are healthy, do not cause harm to the environment, support farming communities and are humane to animals. When we eat sustainable food it means awareness of the issues, learning about food, and being familiar with the people who grow and sell it.
The concept of sustainability means eating local food and buying them fresh from a farm that is close to you. After food is harvested or processed, it begins to lose its nutrients, so the less time it takes you to buy the food and prepare them, the more nutritious your food remains. A lot of people claim that sustainable food tastes better that other processed and manufactured food. Industrial-raised animals lack the flavor that sustainable meats have. Animals are also treated in a gentle and humane manner. Some factory-farmed animals often get sick because of the crammed and unsanitary conditions that they experience. Meat from these animals are processed and sold in the market. There are some food products and ingredients in the market that you are unfamiliar with and you are unsure if they are safe for you and your children. With sustainable food you can be certain that they are produced without the excessive use of pesticides and harmful chemicals. Sustainable farmers are also aware of the importance of protecting the natural environment. They manage their farms in a responsible manner and see to it that they preserve the land and its resources for future generations.
So which would you chose? Food that you are sure was properly cultivated and raised or the ones that you are uncertain of how they are processed and manufactured? If you want to eat well and healthy, then sustainable food is the way for you.
